Northside Package Store of Johnson City Inc. was established in 1990 by Robert Dennis
Mr. Dennis was the co-founder of T.P.I. Corporation, one of the largest electric heating manufacturers in the world for 50 years during his lifetime.
He was a native of Cocke County, TN. Robert (everybody called him Bob), was a very successful entrepreneur with only an 8th grade education. During his lifetime and upon his passing, he was honored and recognized on numerous occasions by the Senate of the State of Tennessee for his contributions as “one of Tennessee’s most prominent businessmen. He grew up supporting his mother and 5 siblings while trapping animals in the Appalachian mountains to help feed his family and became owner of his first business (a soda fountain) while barely in his teens. He later became owner of the Coffee Pot restaurant in Newport, TN., the Peggy Anne restaurant in Kingsport and the Beverly Court hotel and restaurant on the corner of Sunset and North Roan in Johnson City.

The first location of Northside was in an old bank building on the corner of Sunset Drive and North Roan Street. Several years later, the store was moved to its present location on Browns Mill Road in the shopping center formally known as Sunset Center (also developed by Robert and his partner). Robert was a generous and caring employer and was much revered by his business associates and employees alike. He passed away in April of 2001
Upon Robert’s death, his daughter, Tanya, inherited the store and began the arduous task of reorganizing the business. The first thing Tanya did was change the name of the business to “Northside Wine and Spirits”. An extensive re-merchandising followed including adding a huge new selection of wine and soon Northside became one of the top spirits retailers in Johnson City. At that time, Tanya was a seasoned professional musician residing in Nashville and touring as a supporting vocalist, fiddler and guitar player with major country music artists such as Faith Hill, Janie Fricke, Skip Ewing and Bill Anderson. Just after her father’s passing, Tanya also began touring in Europe in support of her first selfpenned, promoted and produced release “Waterdance” which had been nominated for and won several awards in the world of country music including “Female Rising Star (European Market)”.
In the years to follow, the business grew in leaps and bounds. Two of the employees who came on board in the early years are still bedrock members of the Northside Team. Pat Daniels and Billy Barker are to be credited with a great deal of the stability, growth and success of Northside.
Our newest full time team members are Greg, Pat, and Alan. Greg has brought a fresh approach to Managing Northside Wine and Spirits. He consistently looks for new products to craft a cocktail and add to the wine section. Greg, Pat, and Alan are available to answer all of your beverage questions!
